Dear Jackson Street,

I hope you have lovely weekends ahead of you. I also hope I’m not the only one who’s been singing songs from Encanto all day. (Week? Month?)

The budget for Fiscal Year 2023 has been the topic of the last few School Committee meetings, and I want to make sure that the JSS community knows how the proposed budget may impact JSS. It’s important to note that the budget has been proposed but not approved yet. There is an ongoing conversation between the public (that’s you!), the School Committee, and the District about what parts of the proposal may need to be reconsidered or revised.

There are a few components to the proposed budget that would bring changes to JSS. In the first draft of the budget, it was proposed that the 1st grade ESP positions in all four elementary schools be cut. The District has since been asked to work those positions back into the budget. The second proposed change is that we would go from having three first grade classes to having two first grade classes. That proposal is based on the fact that we have just over 40 incoming first graders. As the budget stands now, no one would be laid off, even with those proposed changes.

If you want to go deep into the proposed budget, the NPS FY23 Budget Book is here. JSS starts on page 57.

The School Committee will likely vote on whether or not to approve the proposed budget during their April 14th meeting. If you’d like to share your perspective, I encourage you to reach out to your School Committee representative, and to the Superintendent. You can find School Committee members’ contact info here, and the Superintendent can be reached at jprovost@northampton-k12.us. You could also speak during the public comment portion of the April 14th School Committee meeting. I’m happy to discuss this with you, too.

Onward,

Lauren

Querida calle Jackson,

Adelante,

Lauren
