Dear Caregivers: 

The Board of Education has authorized Commissioner Riley to determine when hybrid and remote models will no longer count as days of school, and he has determined that elementary schools must transition to  full-time, in-person instruction five days per week effective Monday, April 5, 2021 and that middle schools must begin full-time, in-person instruction five days per week, effective Wednesday, April 28, 2021. A deadline for the transition to fully in-person learning at the high school will be announced at a later date, we have only been assured a two-week advance notice of the high school implementation date, so we need to gather information now to enable us to quickly pivot when the mandate arrives.

As the new requirements take effect, you have the opportunity to choose to have your children attend fully in-person or fully-remote learning (which will continue to meet compulsory attendance requirements for the rest of this year). Hybrid learning will no longer be an option. It is important to note that the remote learning option may look different than the model offered prior to the implementation of these new requirements. Implementation of fully in-person learning will have a marked impact on classroom arrangements and transportation practices. While we will strive to maximize social distancing in our classrooms and space between students to the maximum extent possible, the number of students in each classroom is expected to increase and the distance between students is expected to decrease. Likewise, social distancing on busses will no longer be possible. Earlier I asked the School Committee to limit school transportation to the minimum statutory requirement for bussing. That was done in order to allow for social distancing on the busses. Since the new requirements will force us to abandon social distancing on the busses, the rationale for limiting transportation access no longer exists. I will be recommending the resumption of transportation services for students in grades 7-12 once their grades join the fully in-person model. If approved, this recommendation will require JFK and NHS to resume their pre-COVID start and end times for the remainder of the year. Additional information concerning the fully in-person and fully remote models at each level follows below.

At the elementary level, fully in-person learning would be very similar to the current hybrid model, only students would have 5 days of in-person instruction instead of 2. All students wishing to remain remote would be enrolled in the district-wide remote class and would not be able to stay with their current teacher unless the district remote teacher is their current teacher.

Similarly, at the middle school we would try to maintain as much as possible of the in-person structures we have established in the hybrid model in place while we extended the number of in-person days from 2 to 5. We think the demand for remote classes will shrink and we may need to close some remote sections if their teachers are needed for in-person instruction.

The changes would be most dramatic at the high school. Instead of having 1 day a week of in-person instruction, students would have 5 days a week. The increase in in-person learning services will require a significant reduction of remote learning instruction, because their teachers will need to be with in-person students on Mondays and Wednesdays, which are currently days when most students receive remote instruction. 

In order to understand the needs of the community, we have developed three surveys. It is critically important that you complete these surveys, especially if you wish to have your child receive remote learning support. Once the deadline for resumption of fully in-person learning arrives, we are required to provide fully in-person instruction for all students except those whose caregivers have opted out of in-person instruction. These surveys will remain open until Friday March 19th. Given the dwindling number of school weeks in the year, this may be the final opportunity for you to choose which mode of instruction your child will receive for the remainder of the school year.

La Junta de Educación ha autorizado al Comisionado Riley a determinar cuándo los modelos híbridos y remotos ya no contarán como días de escuela, y ha determinado que las escuelas primarias deben hacer la transición a la instrucción presencial a tiempo completo cinco días a la semana a partir del lunes de abril. 5, 2021 y que las escuelas intermedias deben comenzar la instrucción presencial a tiempo completo cinco días a la semana, a partir del miércoles 28 de abril de 2021. Eso se hizo para permitir el distanciamiento social en los autobuses. Dado que los nuevos requisitos nos obligarán a abandonar el distanciamiento social en los autobuses, la justificación para limitar el acceso al transporte ya no existe. Recomendaré la reanudación de los servicios de transporte para los estudiantes en los grados 7-12 una vez que sus calificaciones se unan al modelo completamente en persona.Si se aprueba, esta recomendación requerirá que JFK y NHS reanuden sus horas de inicio y finalización anteriores a COVID durante el resto del año.
