Freshampton: School Nutrition Services of NPS

Our Mission

Freshampton, the School Nutrition Services for the Northampton Public School District, is dedicated to providing students with delicious, nourishing meals every day. The mission involves a strong focus on community and nutrition education.

Key aspects of Freshampton's mission include:

  • Providing fresh, local meals: The program focuses on sourcing a significant portion of our produce from local farmers to support the community and ensure students receive fresh ingredients.
  • Offering student-driven choices: Freshampton elevates student voices by holding taste tests for new menu items and incorporating popular, healthy choices into the school lunch menu.
  • Integrating "farm to school" programming: A core part of the mission is connecting the cafeteria, classroom, and community. This includes working with community partners to provide hands-on learning experiences, such as school gardens, cooking programs, and field trips.
  • Balancing nutrition and appeal: Freshampton aims to strike a balance between serving nutritious meals and ensuring the food is appealing to students. For example, while serving options like pizza, we use healthier, whole-grain, and low-sodium recipes and serve them with fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Promoting education: The mission is not just about serving food but also about teaching students to have a healthy relationship with food, understanding where their food comes from, and making informed decisions about what they eat.
